Career at SAIL

A story of roles, problems solved, and impact — not a bare record of titles and dates.

Joined Rourkela Steel Plant, part of the Maharatna company SAIL, in November 1980, after graduating in Mechanical Engineering from the then REC Rourkela. Worked at RSP for thirty-eight years, from Graduate Engineer (Training) to Deputy General Manager, and superannuated in August 2018 with much satisfaction.

Roles, Chronologically

Construction / Project Department

1980 – 1998

Posted to the Construction Department after training, later renamed the Project Department. In charge of maintenance and operation of construction equipment and the department's vehicle fleet, procuring and deploying equipment for projects including the Captive Power Plant and the expansion of RSP. Completed special assignments including commissioning the leftover Silicon Steel Plant job, Launder modification work at the Barsua iron ore mines, and to-and-fro conveyorisation from Sinter Plant–2 to the blast furnace.

Sinter Plant–2

1998 – 2014

Served as Mechanical Head and subsequently Operation Head. Was area promoter for Quality Circles and the department's training officer, and served as Lead Auditor for ISO 9000, ISO 14001, and ISO 18001. Also Key Driver for the new Sinter Plant–3, conceived in 2007 — responsible for specifications, vendor selection, and contract agreements; commissioning was completed in 2012.

Sinter Plant–1

2014 – 2018

Transferred to Sinter Plant–1, a unit constructed in 1965, and worked there until retirement in August 2018. As departmental head, led extensive renovation work to improve the unit's performance.

Served as Safety Officer for all three sinter plants over the course of his career at SAIL.

Firsts

Under his tenure as Mechanical Head and later Operation Head, Sinter Plant–2 became the first department in Rourkela Steel Plant to receive both ISO 9000 and ISO 14001 certification simultaneously.

Recognition & Records

Recipient of the Long Service Award (2006). Lead Auditor for ISO 9000, ISO 14001, and ISO 18001, as well as safety — received the Best Auditor Award, and audited Durgapur Steel Plant and Bhilai Steel Plant.
